Deleting protected text

I was playing with the mail merge demo off the website, and when inserting a

field, that field become protected. I would like to be able to delete the

field by just putting the cursor before or after the protected section, then

pressing delete or backspace accordingly. Right now you have to select the

entire protected portion in order to delete it. I'm trying to make it

behave more like Word. I am new to the component so I have no idea where to

start. Can someone point me in the right direction to create this behavior?
