Checking if empty:

IsEmpty: = (rve.ItemCount = 0) or ((rve.ItemCount = 1) and

  (rve.GetItemStyle(0) >= 0) and (rve.GetItemText(0) = ''))

Checking if there is something but the text:

IsNonText := False;

for i := 0 to rve.ItemCount-1 do

  if rve.GetItemStyle(i)<0 then begin

    IsNonText := True;

    break;

  end;
